On this day in 1965, Sir Winston Churchill, a British politician, army officer, and writer, passed away in London. He was 90 years old.


Churchill was born in 1874 at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire to an aristocratic family. Throughout his impressive career in the military, he served all over world and fought in many battles. At the time, he was also gaining fame as a war correspondent and writing books about his campaigns. Eventually he resigned and turned his focus to literature and politics. By the turn of the century he was elected to Parliament...


According to History, "In 1904, he joined the Liberals, serving in a number of important posts before being appointed Britain’s first lord of the admiralty in 1911, where he worked to bring the British navy to a readiness for the war that he foresaw." Within a decade he became a cabinet member and later was secretary of state for war. During World War II he was made prime minister of a new coalition government. Following the war, Churchill resigned but was eventually re-elected. He retired after 4 years in 1955 but stayed in Parliament for almost a decade. Within a year, he passed away...


His many accomplishments include forming an alliance with Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin against the Axis, receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature and being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. And in 2017, Gary Oldman played him on screen and won the Oscar for his performance.
