As the fourth of six children, Hitler overtook the role of "big brother" as all three of his older siblings had died in infancy. In 1900, Hitler's younger brother Edmund passed away from measles, changing him from a confident, outgoing and conscientious child to a morose, detached and sullen boy. Eventually, he developed German nationalist and adopted antisemitic ideals.
